Feminism and Emancipation: The Story That Turned March 8th into Women's Rights Day

After the Socialist Party of America organized Women's Day on February 28, 1909 in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference proposed holding Women's Day annually.

In Soviet Russia, March 8, 1917 became special. On this date, a women's demonstration for bread and peace took place, and March 8 became a national holiday. At the time, this day was predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 1975.

Women's rights and world peace

The UN began celebrating International Women's Day on International Women's Year in 1975. In 1977, the UN General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as UN Day for Women's Rights and World Peace. Today is International Women's Day - a public holiday in most countries, a day of protest in others, or a day dedicated to femininity and women's achievements.

Women's days in Europe and Asia

In August 1910, before the general meeting of the Second Socialist International in Copenhagen, Denmark, the International Conference of Socialist Women was organized. Inspired in part by American women, German socialist Louise Zitz proposed an annual Women's Day. She was supported by her socialist colleague and later the communist leader Klara Zetkin, who was also supported by Kete Dunker. Delegates - 100 women from 17 countries - agreed with the idea as a strategy for promoting equal rights, including women's suffrage.

On March 19, 1911, International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time by more than a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. And in Great Britain in London on March 8, 1914, a march was held from Bowe to Trafalgar Square in support of women's suffrage. In Australia, International Women's Day has been unofficially celebrated since the early 1920s. These days, International Women's Day is celebrated in Australia with a variety of events, including marches, rallies and fundraising events.
