After the Socialist Party of America organized Women's Day on February 28, 1909 in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference proposed holding Women's Day annually.
In Soviet Russia, March 8, 1917 became special. On this date, a women's demonstration for bread and peace took place, and March 8 became a national holiday. At the time, this day was predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 1975.
Women's rights and world peace
The UN began celebrating International Women's Day on International Women's Year in 1975. On March 19, 1911, International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time by more than a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. And in Great Britain in London on March 8, 1914, a march was held from Bowe to Trafalgar Square in support of women's suffrage. In Australia, International Women's Day has been unofficially celebrated since the early 1920s.
